Protection visas · Subclass 785
Car finance on a Temporary Protection visa.
A subclass 785 carries work rights, and work rights are where any car loan conversation starts. It is also temporary, and a car loan is not. We would rather set that out honestly at the beginning than let you find it out after an application has been lodged. Options here are narrower than they are for a permanent resident. They are not always absent.
Start here
What the subclass 785 is, and what we will not claim about it.
The Temporary Protection visa (subclass 785) is granted to people found to be owed protection by Australia. It allows you to live here, to work and to study, and it is a temporary visa: it runs to a date, and holders have generally needed to apply again to continue their protection rather than simply carrying on.
Beyond that, we are going to be careful. Arrangements for protection visas in Australia have changed over the years, and they continue to change. What happens at the end of a 785, what a holder may be eligible to apply for next, and how long a grant runs are questions with real consequences for a person's life, and a finance broker is not the right source of truth for any of them.
For those questions, the Department of Home Affairs and a registered migration agent are who to ask. Your own grant notice is the document that governs your situation. We will work with what it says; we will not tell you what it should say.
Sites that state migration pathways as settled fact are often quoting a rule that has since been replaced. A number that is out of date is worse than no number, because it gets planned around. On this page you will find how lenders think and what is within your control, and nothing about your visa future dressed up as certainty.
The honest part
A time-limited visa against a long loan term.
Car loans in Australia commonly run for five to seven years. A 785 does not. That is the tension at the centre of every application on this visa, and there is no clever way to phrase it away.
Lenders are not making a judgement about you as a person when they ask. They are asking one commercial question about a long contract: how confident can we be that this repayment can be made, month after month, for the whole term? For a citizen or permanent resident, a job and a clean repayment record answer that. Where the visa is temporary, the visa becomes part of the same arithmetic, and fewer lenders are willing to do that arithmetic at all.
So expect a narrower field than a permanent resident would have. What can still move within it is the shape of the file, and some of that is genuinely in your hands.
| What can change the shape of a file | Why it can matter | What to weigh against it |
|---|---|---|
| A larger deposit | Less is borrowed, so less is at risk and the repayment is smaller. | Savings spent on a deposit are savings no longer there for an emergency or a visa application cost. |
| A shorter loan term | Closes some of the gap between the length of the debt and the certainty around it. | Shorter terms mean higher repayments each month. The budget has to be honest, not hopeful. |
| A less expensive vehicle | A smaller loan is easier to service and easier to assess. | Very old or very cheap cars can cost more to keep running, and not every lender will fund them. |
| A co-borrower | Another person's income and credit record come into the assessment alongside yours. | Each of you becomes liable for the whole debt, not a share of it. Relationships change; contracts do not. |
No rates, no deposit amounts, no lender names, and nothing about how much time a lender wants left on a visa. We are a broker under a credit licence, and putting those numbers on a public page would mean inventing them. Which lenders on our panel might consider your circumstances is worked out from your actual file, and it costs nothing to have that looked at.
The assessment
What lenders look at.
Income and how steady it is
Work rights only matter once there is work behind them. Time in the same job, hours that do not swing wildly, and pay landing in a bank account all read better than the same money earned unevenly across several roles.
What is already committed
Rent, other loans, card limits, people who depend on you, and what living actually costs where you are. Lenders assess what is left after all of it, not what you earn before any of it.
The loan and the car
How much is being borrowed against how much is being contributed, over how long, and what the vehicle is. The car is the security, so its age and condition affect what can be funded and by whom.
Worth saying plainly
A car loan is not always the right answer.
Sometimes the useful thing a broker can say is not yet, or not this way. That is not a broker being unhelpful or failing at their job. It is the job.
If the repayment only works when your hours are at their best, or if there is nothing left over for a registration bill or a repair, then borrowing is likely to make the year harder rather than easier. A loan that becomes unaffordable is a much bigger problem than not having the car.
There may be other routes to the same end: a cheaper car bought outright over time, help from a community or settlement organisation, or simply waiting until the income picture is steadier. Those are real options, not consolation prizes.
If you are unsure whether you can afford it
Free, independent financial counselling is available in Australia. It is confidential, it is not connected to any lender or broker, and the counsellor has nothing to sell you. If you are weighing up whether a repayment is genuinely manageable, speaking to one before you apply is a sensible step, and we will say so to anyone who asks us.
Get ready
What to have handy.
None of this is needed to start a conversation. It is what finishes one. On temporary visa files, missing paperwork is the most common reason an answer takes weeks instead of days.
If English is not the language you are most comfortable in, bring someone you trust to the conversation, or tell us and we will slow down. Nobody should sign a credit contract they have not fully understood.
Common questions
Temporary Protection visa car finance, answered.
Can someone on a subclass 785 get a car loan?
Sometimes. The visa carries work rights, which is the foundation any application needs, but it is temporary and that narrows the field of lenders considerably. We would rather describe it as possible in some circumstances than encourage you toward an outcome we cannot see from here. What decides it is your own file: your income, your commitments, what you can contribute and what you are buying.
How long do I need left on my visa?
We will not put a number on that. Any figure would be one lender's criteria on one day, and criteria in this area change. Broadly, more time remaining makes a file easier and less time makes it harder. Send us your grant notice and we will work from what is actually written on it rather than from a rule of thumb.
What happens to my loan if my visa situation changes?
The loan does not change. It remains a contract you are responsible for, and the car remains security against it. That is exactly why this is worth thinking through slowly before signing rather than afterwards. If your circumstances shift while you have a loan, tell the lender early rather than late; hardship provisions exist under Australian credit law and they work far better before payments are missed.
Can you tell me what I can apply for after this visa?
No, and we would be doing you a disservice if we tried. Arrangements for protection visas have changed over time and continue to change. The Department of Home Affairs and a registered migration agent are the right sources for anything about your pathway, your options or your timing. Our part is credit, and we will stay in it.
Would a deposit or a co-borrower make a difference?
Each can change how a file looks, though neither is a promise and neither works the same way at every lender. A deposit reduces what you borrow. A co-borrower brings a second income and credit record into the assessment, and also makes that person legally responsible for the entire debt. That is a serious thing to ask of someone, and they should get their own independent advice before agreeing.
Does enquiring affect my credit score?
No. Talking to us is not an application. We look at your circumstances against lender criteria before anything is lodged, so no credit enquiry is recorded and your score is untouched. There is no cost and no obligation to proceed.
What if you tell me to wait?
Then that is our genuine view, and it is worth more than a lodged application that fails. Waiting might mean building savings, getting a few more months of steady work behind you, or simply looking at a cheaper car. We will tell you what specifically would need to be different, so it is a plan rather than a refusal.
Where can I get advice that is not from a broker?
Free and confidential financial counselling is available in Australia, independent of lenders and brokers, and a counsellor can go through your budget with you without anything to sell. For migration questions, a registered migration agent or the Department of Home Affairs. We would rather you spoke to both than took a car loan on our word alone.
If you would like us to look
Send us your grant notice and we will tell you where you stand.
There is no cost, no obligation and no credit enquiry while we work it out. If there is a lender on our panel for your circumstances, we will say so. If there is not one today, you will hear that plainly, along with what would need to change.
The Finance Team is the trading name of Online Showroom Pty Ltd and holds Australian Credit Licence 551493. We are a credit broker, not a lender, and nothing on this page is an offer of credit or a recommendation to borrow. Any figures or examples discussed with you are estimates only, and every application is subject to full assessment and approval by the lender.
