Low doc car loans.

Your income is real. It just doesn't arrive fortnightly with a payslip attached. Low doc lending exists for exactly that gap — different paperwork, not a lower standard — and this page explains what it does and doesn't mean before you apply.

What "low doc" actually means.

Low doc is short for low documentation. It describes an application where a lender accepts a different set of income evidence from the standard payslips-and-group-certificate bundle, because that bundle doesn't exist for the person applying.

That is the whole of it. Low doc is not a shortcut, a workaround, or a category of lending for people who couldn't get approved the normal way. It is a documentation pathway for people whose income is perfectly genuine but is recorded differently — in invoices, BAS lodgements, business bank accounts and a tax return that may be months from being finalised.

The part that gets misread most often is the word "low". Fewer documents does not mean less assessment. Under Australian credit law, a lender must make reasonable enquiries into your financial situation and must be satisfied the repayments are affordable for you without substantial hardship. That obligation does not switch off because you're self-employed. It applies to every consumer credit application, full doc or low doc, and no lender can waive it for you.

So what changes on a low doc file?

The evidence changes, not the standard. Instead of proving your income with payslips, you prove it another way — and because the picture is assembled from more pieces, a lender usually wants more surrounding comfort: how long you've traded, what you're contributing, how your accounts have behaved. The question being answered is identical: can this person afford this repayment?

A general comparison of the two pathways. Individual lenders set their own requirements and change them without notice — this is not a statement of any lender's policy.

Who it typically suits PAYG employees, and self-employed people whose returns are lodged and up to date. Sole traders, contractors, seasonal and newly self-employed people whose returns aren't yet current.
How income is shown Payslips, or lodged tax returns and financial statements. Alternative evidence — business banking, BAS, an accountant's declaration, or a combination.
Affordability assessment Required. Equally required.
Typical cost Priced on a complete financial picture. Generally dearer, because the lender is pricing with less information in front of it.
What carries extra weight Consistency of salary and length of employment. Deposit, trading history, payment conduct and the quality of your records.
What we won't put on this page

No rates, no fees, no minimum trading period, and no list of which lenders do low doc lending and on what terms. Every one of those varies between lenders and moves regularly, so publishing a figure would be inventing a fact. Working out which of the 60-plus lenders on our panel suits how you actually earn is the job, and it costs nothing to ask.

How it works

Three steps.

1

Tell us how you earn

Your structure, how long you've been trading, roughly what the business turns over, what you draw from it and what documents exist right now. A few minutes online or one phone call.

2

We work out the right pathway

Sometimes that's a low doc application. Sometimes it's a full doc one you're closer to qualifying for than you realise. We check policy before anything is lodged, so your credit file isn't used to find out.

3

We run it to settlement

One broker prepares the file, deals with the lender, chases the paperwork and answers the phone — through approval, settlement and collection of the vehicle.

Get ready

What tends to strengthen a low doc file.

None of these is a rule and none of them guarantees anything. They are simply the things that, in general, give a lender more to be satisfied by when payslips aren't part of the picture. The more of them you have in order, the fewer questions come back.

A meaningful depositOr a trade-in. It shrinks the loan, reduces what the lender has at risk, and is the lever most within your own control.
Clean payment conductLoans and cards paid on time, no dishonours, and no cluster of recent credit applications behind you.
BAS lodged and currentActivity statements up to date and consistent with what your bank account shows. Overdue lodgements raise questions before anyone reads the numbers.
Tidy business bankingBusiness and personal kept separate, income landing in an account rather than in cash, and statements you're comfortable having read line by line.
An accountant's declarationSome pathways use a signed statement from your accountant about your income. Worth asking whether yours will provide one before you rely on it.
Time behind you, plus the vehicleAn ABN and GST registration that have been running a while, and the listing or invoice if you've already found the car.

The honest bit

Low doc costs more. Here's why, and when to avoid it.

A lender prices for uncertainty. Where it can see a full financial history, it knows what it is lending against. Where it is working from a narrower set of documents, it carries more unknowns — and that shows up in the cost of the loan. We won't quote you a number, but you should walk in expecting a low doc application to be dearer than the same application with complete paperwork behind it.

Which leads to the advice most low doc pages leave out.

Sometimes the better answer is to wait

If your tax return is nearly ready to lodge, or your first full financial year finishes in a couple of months, waiting and applying as a full doc application will often serve you better than borrowing on low doc terms now. On a loan running several years, the difference between the two pathways is not trivial. If the car can wait a few weeks, it's usually worth asking whether it should.

We'd rather tell you that and see you later than write a dearer loan today. Ask us to compare both timings before you decide — it's a five-minute conversation.

Be realistic about the quiet months

Self-employed income moves. Trades slow over the wet season, hospitality empties out mid-winter, contracts finish and the next one takes six weeks to start. A repayment set against your best quarter can become a problem in your worst one.

Work out the repayment against a realistic average, not a peak, and think about whether you could still meet it during a genuinely slow stretch. If the answer is only just, borrow less or buy a cheaper vehicle. A loan that fits comfortably is worth more than the car you nearly afforded.

Common questions

Low doc car finance, answered.

Does low doc mean no income check?

No, and it's worth being blunt about that because the misunderstanding is common. A lender is legally required to satisfy itself that the repayments are affordable for you. Low doc changes which documents establish your income, not whether your income gets assessed. Anyone suggesting otherwise is describing something that doesn't exist in Australian consumer lending.

I've only recently started working for myself. Is it too early?

Not necessarily, though a shorter trading history does narrow the field, and lenders each draw that line in a different place. What often helps in the early stages is a larger deposit, clean personal credit conduct, and evidence that you were doing similar work as an employee before you went out on your own. Tell us where you're up to and we'll tell you whether it's worth lodging now or worth waiting.

What documents will I actually need?

It depends entirely on the pathway and the lender, so we won't publish a list and call it universal. Broadly, expect to be asked about identity, your ABN and GST registration, business and personal bank statements, and some evidence of income — which might be BAS, an accountant's declaration, or something else again. Once we know your situation, we'll give you a specific list rather than a generic one.

Will a low doc loan cost me more?

Generally, yes. The lender is making a decision with less information than it would have on a fully documented file, and the pricing reflects that. We won't put a figure on it here because any number would be invented, and because the answer depends on your profile, the vehicle and the lender. What we will do is show you the real options side by side and explain what separates them.

My accountant says my taxable income is low. Does that sink it?

It doesn't have to, and it's one of the more common frustrations self-employed people run into. Legitimate deductions reduce taxable income, which can make a healthy business look modest on paper. Low doc pathways exist partly for this reason. Be straight with us about the whole picture and we'll work out which approach represents your position best — but the affordability test still has to be met on real numbers.

Is a low doc loan the same as a business car loan?

They're different things that often overlap. Low doc describes how your income is evidenced. A business car loan describes what the vehicle is used for and how the finance is structured, which has tax and GST implications worth discussing with your accountant. Plenty of files are both. Plenty are one or the other.

Should I just wait until my tax return is lodged?

Sometimes, honestly, yes. If lodgement is close, a full doc application will usually be the cheaper path, and on a multi-year loan that difference matters. If the vehicle is genuinely needed for work now, waiting may cost you more than it saves. It's a real trade-off rather than a formality, and it's exactly the sort of thing to talk through before you apply.

Does talking to you affect my credit score?

No. We check your circumstances against lender criteria before anything is formally lodged, so no enquiry is recorded on your file while we work out where you fit. That matters here more than most — applying to several lenders yourself and collecting declines leaves a trail of enquiries that makes the next attempt harder.

Let's talk

Tell us how you earn. We'll tell you the right way to apply.

No cost, no obligation, and no credit enquiry while we work it out. If low doc is the right pathway, we'll find the lender for it. If waiting a few weeks and applying full doc would serve you better, we'll say that instead.
