Temporary visas · Subclass 482 · Employer sponsored

Car finance on a skilled worker visa.

If you are here on a 482 you usually have the things a lender likes to see: a full-time role, a named sponsoring employer and a salary that is documented rather than estimated. The complication is that your visa and your job are the same fact. We work with that honestly, and tell you where you actually stand.

What the subclass 482 is, in finance terms.

The subclass 482 is a temporary, employer-sponsored work visa. An approved business nominates you for a particular occupation, and the visa you hold is granted on the strength of that nomination. Streams, occupation lists and the periods a visa can be granted for have all been revised over the years, so we won't restate the current settings here — your grant notice and the Department of Home Affairs are the authority on your own conditions, not a broker's website.

For a car loan, three features of the visa do all the work:

  • You are employed, usually full time. The visa exists because a business needed the skill badly enough to sponsor it. That generally means ordinary hours and a payslip that looks like every other salaried payslip a lender assesses.
  • Your employer is named. There is a sponsor on the file, and the nomination behind your visa documents the role and what you are paid. Few temporary visa holders can evidence income that cleanly.
  • It is temporary, and it is tied. The visa runs to a date, and it is attached to the sponsoring employer and the nominated occupation. That is the part a lender thinks hardest about.

Read together, that is a comparatively strong file among temporary visas — stronger than most people on a 482 assume when they start looking. It is not the same as being a permanent resident, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Your grant notice and your employment contract

These two documents answer most of the questions an assessor will ask: what you hold, when it expires, what conditions attach to it, who sponsors you, what you earn and whether you are still on probation. Have both in front of you before the first conversation and it saves a week.

The assessment

How a 482 file reads to a lender.

A car loan commonly runs for several years, so a lender is asking one question in different ways: is this person likely to be here, earning, and able to make this repayment for the whole term? On a 482 the income half of that answer is usually easy. The other half is where the conversation goes.

General principles only. Every lender writes its own policy and revises it without notice — nothing here describes any particular lender.
What the lender weighsWhy a 482 tends to read wellWhat still gets asked
Income Salaried, documented and paid into an account. No reconstructing casual shifts. Whether overtime, allowances or bonuses you are relying on are consistent enough to count.
Employment stability A sponsoring business has committed to the role, which is more than most applicants can show. How long you have been in the job, and whether probation has finished.
Time here Your visa has a defined period, and many 482 holders are working toward something longer term. How the loan term sits against your remaining time, and what your realistic next step is.
Australian credit history Nothing bad on file, in most cases. Whether there is enough history to read at all — a thin file is common if you arrived recently.
Existing commitments Often modest. Many arrivals have no local debt yet. Rent, credit card limits, dependants, and any obligations you still carry overseas.
The vehicle It is the security, so a sensible car in good condition helps the file. Age, kilometres, and whether you are buying from a dealer or privately.
What we won't put on this page

We won't tell you which lenders accept a 482, how many months must be left on your visa, what deposit is expected, or what rate you would pay. Every one of those varies between lenders and moves without warning, so anything we published would be a guess wearing the clothes of a fact. Working out which of the 60-plus lenders on our panel actually suits your circumstances is the job, and asking costs nothing.

How it works

Three steps.

1

Tell us the whole picture

Your subclass and expiry, who sponsors you, how long you have been in the role, what you earn and what you owe. Two minutes online or one phone call.

2

We check policy before lodging

We match your circumstances against lender criteria before anything is submitted, so your credit file isn't used as a testing ground. If nothing fits today, you'll hear it from us.

3

We run it to settlement

Application, approval, settlement and the keys. One broker who knows your file and answers the phone when you ring.

The honest bit

Your job and your visa are one decision.

This is the genuine complication of borrowing on a 482. For a permanent resident, leaving a job is a career decision. For you it is a career decision and a visa decision at once — a new employer generally has to nominate you, and there are time limits on sorting that out. Home Affairs sets those rules and has changed them, so check the current position rather than relying on what a colleague went through two years ago.

A car loan doesn't care about any of that. The repayment is due on the same day of the month whether your sponsorship is settled or not.

What that means in practice

  • Leave more headroom than the numbers require. A repayment that only works at your current salary with your current overtime assumes nothing changes. Something usually does.
  • Be careful with novated leases. If your employer offers salary packaging it can be a reasonable option, but a novated lease is arranged through your employer, so it ties the car to the same relationship the visa already depends on. A standard car loan in your own name is a separate, portable debt. Neither is automatically better; they fail in different ways, and it's worth knowing which failure you would rather manage.
  • Think about the term against your plans. Many 482 holders are working toward permanent residency. A shorter term or a smaller loan now may leave you better placed later than the most car your current payslip can carry.
  • Treat a balloon payment carefully. A balloon lowers the monthly repayment by leaving a lump sum owing at the end. If there is any prospect you won't be in Australia when it falls due, the arithmetic gets uncomfortable quickly.

When we'd tell you to wait

If you are two weeks into a new role, still on probation, or in the middle of a nomination for a different employer, waiting is usually the better call. Time in the job is one of the few things that improves on its own. So is a deposit.

Get ready

What to have handy.

You don't need all of this to start a conversation — only to finish one. On temporary visa files, missing paperwork is the most common reason a straightforward application drags into a second week.

Common questions

Skilled worker visa car finance, answered.

Can I get a car loan on a 482?

It is one of the more workable temporary visa situations, because you usually arrive with a full-time job, a sponsoring employer and documented pay. That is a genuine advantage. It is still assessed case by case, and it still depends on the lender, your time in the role, your commitments and the size of the loan against your income. We'd rather look at your file than give you a yes from a web page.

Does my visa need to last as long as the loan?

Not necessarily, and there is no universal rule to quote you. Lenders set their own view on how remaining visa time lines up with a loan term, and those views differ and change. Generally a longer runway makes the file easier and a very short one makes it harder. Send us the grant notice and we'll work with the dates on it rather than the ones we'd like.

I started the job six weeks ago. Is that too soon?

Sometimes, but not always — this is one of the most common questions we get from 482 holders, because the visa and the job usually start on the same day. Time in role and whether probation has passed both matter to an assessor. If you are very early, a deposit and a modest loan do more to help than anything else. If waiting a couple of months would transform the application, we'll say so.

What happens to the loan if I change employers?

The loan carries on exactly as before. It is a contract between you and the lender, and it has no view about who sponsors you. That's the point worth planning for: your visa depends on your employment relationship, and your repayment doesn't care. If you're weighing up a move, get your visa position clear with Home Affairs or a registered migration agent, and keep enough buffer that a gap in pay isn't also a gap in repayments.

Should I take my employer's novated lease instead?

It's worth comparing properly rather than assuming either way. A novated lease runs through your employer's payroll and can suit some people, but it links the car to the same employment relationship your visa already depends on, and unwinding one when you change jobs takes effort. A car loan in your own name is portable and simpler to end. We'll happily talk through both, including the case where the lease is the better option for you.

I've only just arrived and have no Australian credit history. Does that stop me?

No. A thin file isn't a bad file, and assessors distinguish between the two. With little local history to read, other evidence carries the weight — your employment, your savings, clean bank statements, a deposit. It's an ordinary situation for someone in your position and not a reason to avoid applying.

What rate will I pay?

We won't quote a number before looking at your circumstances, because it would be invented. What's fair to expect is that pricing on temporary visa lending reflects how many lenders are competing for the file, and it varies with the vehicle, the term, your deposit and your credit conduct. Once we know where you fit, we'll put the real options side by side and explain why they differ.

Does asking you affect my credit score?

No. We check your position against lender criteria before anything is formally lodged, so no credit enquiry is recorded while we work out where you fit. That matters more than people realise — applying directly to several lenders and collecting declines leaves a trail of enquiries that makes the next application harder.

Let's talk

Send us your grant notice. We'll tell you where you stand.

No cost, no obligation, and no credit enquiry while we work it out. A 482 file is often stronger than people expect, and we'd rather show you that properly than have you take the first offer on a dealer's desk.
